A Healthier You Starts with A Mindset Makeover
Committing to a new fitness routine or adopting a healthier way of eating is almost impossible if you are sabotaged by faulty thinking. If you’re looking to make lasting changes to your life, think differently. Sun Basket’s Director of Nutrition, Lindsey Kane shares this step-by-step guide to giving your mind-set a makeover that will set you up for success.
Before starting a new health routine, it’s important to understand why health matters in the first place. Think about a big goal you have, such as being a more active parent or hiking an epic trail, and spell out how your health supports that ambition. When you align your wellbeing with your core values, you give yourself a compass to guide you through challenges. Your “why” is a reminder that you aren’t striving for health for the sake of being healthy. Your “why” gives your goal a greater purpose.
Before you can succeed, you need to know what success looks like to you. Get specific and envision your best life. Visualization is an incredibly powerful tool; in fact, many elite athletes attribute their success to mental training and imagery. Consider making a vision board, or a private Pinterest board, for images that inspire you.
Rewrite Your Story
Before you can change your actions, you have to change your narrative. Fill your head with empowering real talk, which will crowd out the negative chatter and self-deprecating beliefs that may be holding you back.
Change Your POV
Ditch the victim mentality. Take responsibility for where you are today, and regain control of where your life is headed. It’s a simple choice that can make or break your happiness and either propel you forward or hold you back.
Call Out Your Cop-Outs
Most of us are great at finding reasons why we can’t do something. When you find yourself making excuses, be honest and call out BS when you see it. We allocate time for the things that are important to us and make excuses for everything else. Rather than saying, “I didn’t have time to go to the gym,” change the dialogue to, “I decided to spend my time doing Xx instead of going to the gym.” If you find yourself constantly mis-prioritizing things, some real talk can help you identify those patterns so that you can reset your priorities.
Adopt a Growth Mindset
Those with growth mindsets see failure as feedback and an opportunity to improve. Take the fear out of failure by remembering that progress is not linear, setbacks are expected, and improvement doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, improving just 1 percent every day is all it takes, and over time, the results compound. Most importantly, resist the temptation to compare yourself to others. The only thing that matters is that you’re getting better every day.
Redefine Your Healthy Philosophy
Ditch the diet mentality. You’ve done it before, and there’s a reason you’re back to where you started. Seize the opportunity to rewrite your own personal health philosophy (here are ours). Come up with your own manifesto about what it means to live a healthy life.
Reframe Your Goals
Rather than set goals for things that can be difficult to control, start with small, action-oriented habits that show progress on a daily basis, like drinking eight glasses of water a day, filling half your plate with vegetables at every meal, and getting eight hours of sleep every night. You’ll quickly notice results in your overall health. It’s easier to hold yourself accountable, feel motivated, and build consistency when you set goals that you can actually control.
Learn a New Language
Choose your words carefully, not only the ones you speak to others but also the unspoken words that live in your mind. Start with these easy word swaps: “I get to ____” vs. “I have to ____”, “I choose to ____” vs. “I should ____.” Thoughts dictate the actions that shape your reality. Change your script, and your actions will follow.
QC the Company You Keep
Think about the people you spend the most time with. Do they make you feel good about your life, or do they completely drain your battery? If you surround yourself with body-shaming, calorie-crazed, diet-obsessed victims, the same self-deprecating plague will take over your mind too. Alternatively, if you hang with positive, empowering, self-loving agents of change, you’ll find your attitude will mirror theirs. This includes social media: be selective about who you follow and pay attention to the emotions evoked as you scroll through your feed. Unfollow those who elicit negativity, and give a thumbs up to those who bring on the positive vibes.
