Our Five Favorite Nutrition Apps

We could all use a little help when it comes to sticking to a healthy diet. Now your phone can also function as your personal nutritionist. Sun Basket's staff dietitian, Kaley Todd, offers her top picks for the best nutrition apps.

Cara
This personal food and symptom diary helps you connect how you feel to what you eat. Enter foods, track symptoms and digestion and elimination details to get a daily score. Used consistently, Cara enables users to share trends with medical professionals and may help them learn to avoid the triggers altogether. Though the database is somewhat limited, users can easily add their own foods to it.

Fooducate
This app functions as your personal supermarket scanner. Pass it over a packaged food’s barcode and it will produce a letter score (A, B, C or D) based on the ingredients  nutritional value. Foods that don’t have barcodes can be entered by name. The app analyzes the item and provides information, such as the amounts of added sugar, preservatives, MSG and controversial food colorings. The program aims to help users learn about a product’s pros and cons in order to decide whether eating it makes sense for their weight loss goals and overall health.

HealthyOut
For those nights when you’re not eating a Sun Basket meal at home, the HealthyOut app helps you choose a restaurant that can deliver the kind of good-for-you food you’ve become accustomed to. Enter your location and your dietary restrictions (like gluten sensitive, for example). The app then tells you which dishes are being served at restaurants near you that meet your needs. It also explains how to modify a meal once you get there to make it fit your food goals.
