An update on COVID-19

Sun Basket is dedicated to the safety, health, and wellbeing of our employees, our customers, and our community.  We know these are challenging times and you rely on us for healthy and clean food delivered to your doorstep. We take this responsibility very seriously and it’s a privilege to serve you.

We are experiencing a period of extremely high demand and labor shortages.  As our teams work to increase capacity it is possible we will be temporarily unable to accept new orders. Some customers with orders already placed may see some changes to your Sun Basket experience such as proactive delivery day changes and simplifying our number of weekly menu options. These changes provide our operational teams with the flexibility to produce more meals and meet the growing food delivery needs for all our customers. You may also see some of our market add-on items out of stock, we encourage you to check back frequently. Please know that our teams are working around the clock to replenish our shelves and to bring you your weekly basket.

We are committed to staying open and serving you. Sun Basket is an essential food service and is excluded from business closures impacting many parts of the country. We are working closely with our carrier partners to ensure your deliveries remain reliable and consistent. Due to unusually high demand it is possible that we may have to temporarily stop accepting orders. Our facilities are working around the clock to increase supply and serve you. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience. As always, Sun Basket deliveries are no-contact, straight to your doorstep. 

Customers with existing orders placed may experience proactive changes to your delivery day, or delivery delays stemming from your box leaving the facility later than planned rather than spending longer time in transit. We will proactively message customers with known delivery changes as we balance fulfillment of orders across both our distribution centers.

We are moving to a simplified menu for the upcoming weeks that still brings you paleo, gluten-free and vegetarian options. We are working hard to return to our full weekly menu as soon as we can.

We will publish our 3-week out menu a little later to give us more time as we adjust to weekly events.

According to the CDC there is no known risk of COVID-19 transmission through food and risk of transmission from surfaces is also low. This is the up-to-date information from CDC: “Coronaviruses are generally thought to be spread from person-to-person through respiratory droplets. Currently there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with food. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from food products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient, refrigerated, or frozen temperatures.”

According to the World Health Organization it is safe to handle packages even if delivered from locations with COVID-19 cases. From the WHO: “The likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low and the risk of catching the virus that causes COVID-19 from a package that has been moved, travelled, and exposed to different conditions and temperature is also low.” The CDC agrees that the risk of transmission from surfaces is low. Additionally, all our delivery partners are taking several precautionary measures to keep your box safe. 

Sun Basket facilities have the highest levels of food and employee safety. We are reinforcing strict adherence to our existing standard operating procedures and increasing sanitization frequency in our offices and distribution centers. We are also providing our teams with additional protective equipment, and further distancing teams and shifts. As we closely monitor the evolving situation we will continue to stay at the forefront of best practices set in place by the CDC, WHO, FDA, and local authorities.

Our delivery partners share our key concerns on customer and employee wellness. All our deliveries are no-contact. All our national delivery partners are all following heightened protocols to reduce cross-contamination set in place by the CDC, WHO, FDA, and local authorities. These policies include among many others: increased sanitation procedures, widespread access to hand-hygiene products, disinfecting wipes and policies to discourage sick employees from coming to work.

The health and well-being of our employees and customers is our highest priority.  Yes, our employees receive paid sick leave. In response to these unprecedented times, we have created additional paid sick leave for all employees who may be affected by the COVID-19 virus.

During the COVID-19 outbreak we are committed to provide our frontline employees with additional “hero pay”, as they work tirelessly to ensure thousands of customers across the country receive fresh food, delivered safely to your door as you shelter-in-place. This is just one way that we convey our thanks and gratitude.

We are doing the best we can to keep items in stock and are in constant contact with our suppliers.

  • Recipes: Due to unusually high demand recipes are selling out very quickly. Our facilities are working around the clock to increase supply and serve you. We understand the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
  • Organic Produce: If we are unable to procure organic produce we will temporarily adjust to conventional in order to maintain the overall supply of meals to our customers. We will temporarily not include drop-slips in your boxes regarding this change. As always, all organic items will be labelled.
  • Market items: if market items are out of stock we encourage you to check back to our website frequently.

In times when we are sold out, those who are elderly, health-care workers, or people otherwise medically unable to leave your house you will be given the opportunity to self-identify as a vulnerable person when trying to place an order. We will do our best to prioritize you!
